STEPHANIE KRELLWITZ
Protection, high resolution print on vinyl, 8’x8’, 2023
Inspired by the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, I created this hand-drawn digital illustration of a uterus formed from anemone, hypericum, astrantia, and malva flowers. In floriography, the use of flowers as communication symbols, each of these flowers represents protection. In its original form, this illustration was a simplified black line drawing which I turned into printed cards, art prints, and stickers as a fundraising effort to help support Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. My hope in doing so was to invest in a brighter future for women’s rights.
In 2023, when I applied to PPWI’s call for art and was asked to create a version of the design in full color for Water Street Health Center, I was thrilled. I feel like this piece is finally ‘home’.
More about the artist:
I am an independent artist who utilizes various 2D media to create original artwork in the form of murals, fine wall art, window displays, logos, and stationery. I create work that strives to inspire a sense of unity, belonging, and joy for viewers, and am especially drawn to vibrant colors and nature-based themes. I hold a personal interest in symbolism, especially floriography, and use this knowledge to create pieces intended to imbue spaces with deeper meaning in addition to aesthetic beauty. I am passionate about creating collaborative pieces for accessible public spaces that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. Additionally, I enjoy using my skills to create artwork to benefit local causes close to my heart including nonprofits that fight for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights.
