KAITLIN ESCHE-LYON

Zaha Quilt, fiber, 52" x 72", 2022

This quilt was inspired by my love of the architect Zaha Hadid and her contributions to women in architecture. Zaha Quilt explores a one of a kind approach to a quilting technique called foundation paper piecing. This process started with a photo of each building, then creating a pattern, then piecing, and quilting. Each building took at least 10 hours to complete. Each of the buildings is expressed in a rainbow of color and dimension.

Buildings featured on the quilt: Top Left: Jockey Club, Hong Kong. Top Center: Riverside Museum, Glasgow. Bottom Left: Guang Zhou Da Jun Yuan Opera House, China. Right Side from Top to Bottom: Serpentine Gallery, London. London Aquatics Center, London. Pierre’s Vives, Montpelier, France. Heydar Aliyev Centre, Baku, Azerbaijan.

Why Water Street?

Having my work, especially the Zaha Quilt, at the Water Street Health Center means the world to me. I was hoping one of my pieces would be chosen to bring color and comfort into the space. When I was notified that Zaha was chosen, I burst into tears. Having this specific quilt, that’s a tribute to a world renowned female architect, in a place that supports women is a perfect fit. My hope is that the Zaha Quilt inspires and empowers people to reach farther, dream harder, and go for it.
