Assembled from colored spotlight gel filters in multiple layers to give light room to move through the work and create different color combinations and shadows as the viewer moves or the lighting source changes. The rainbow spectrum created by the overlapping colors is meant as a direct support LGBTQ+ pride along with evoking other meaning culturally and personally associated with rainbows such as new beginnings and transformation after a storm or a simple reminder of the hidden beauty within everyday light.
Why Water Street?
I care deeply about Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin’s mission to empower all individuals to manage their sexual and reproductive health, including their advocacy for abortion access. Their offering of quality affordable health care has also been important to me and loved ones in the past during times when we had limited financial resources and inadequate health insurance. Planned Parenthood plays a critical healthcare role, and I am proud to have my work in the Water Street Health Center.
More about the artist:
I produce fine art and retail-targeted art pieces mainly under the moniker of EclecticMundane. My work involves three-dimensional objects and bright colors in minimal, high contrast compositions. I often work with nostalgic objects, particularly plastic items with an aspect of tactile memory. The feel of the ridges on a cassette tape’s spindle, the crinkle of cellophane, the smoothness of shrink wrap, etc. Many pieces use gold, magenta, neon, and other highly saturated colors. Some pieces are further abstracted so that color, shape, and texture are the focus rather than a readily discernible object. Much of my inspiration comes from browsing thrift and antique stores along with retro color palettes and design styles from my early youth in the eighties. I am also inspired by Color Field and Hard-edge painting styles in their use of minimal compositions and saturated colors as well as Pop Art in the use of bright colors and mundane subject matter.
